Its not just a saree!

Chanderi, a little town in the state of Madhya Pradesh has a years long of history to talk about its weavers and their work. For centuries weavers have been entwined with the town & its history and if epics were to be believed then Chanderi fabric is said to be founded by Shishupal- Lord Krishan’s cousin. Though no strong facts states the beginning of this weaving era but some evidences on the historical timeline of Chanderi iterate its existence since 14th century. This was the time when Hazrat Wajihuddin Yusuf, a great Sufi saint was ordered by Hazrat Nizamuddin to settle in and serve the people of Chanderi. Mentions in the book Siyar-ul-Aulia by Meer Khurd shows how popular Wajihuddin was not only amongst the tribe of Chanderi but in the hearts of people coming from as far as Lakhnauti region close to Dhaka. Since, even in those days weaving was a major practice in Dhaka, it is believed that the settlements that arrived in Chanderi as devotees of Wajihuddin were the ones who laid the foundation of what we today call Chanderi Saree or say Chander ki Saree.

On a three-day trip to this historical and weavers town, one eve has to be set aside to peek into what every lady wants to drape herself with. Throw a stone and it will land in the house of a Bunkar, said our guide Kalle Bhai. Its understood that this exceptional lustrous fabric was made only for the royals in the past. What piques my mind today is, what is it that even today an unadulterated piece of saree costs a fortune and is still not everyone’s piece of cloth (I know but aren’t we talking about sarees).

With this thought in mind began my quest to know why Chanderi Saree is not just a saree.  We already saw in the beginning how the seeds of weaving were laid in the grounds of Chanderi. Now the question was of material procurement. What sort of thread were being used? Where do the weavers get the threads from? What machinery was used? What all developments the weaving industry of Chanderi has gone through? And the questions won’t stop popping up.

Knowing the fabric used for Chanderi Saree

Chanderi is a fabric made by weaving silk with cotton yarn and adding delicacy to it in the form of zari. Zari is a thread available in three colours namely gold, silver & copper and is used to embrace the saree with majestic designs by blending it with silk and mercerized cotton (a special polymer coated cotton making it more lusty). What makes it even more special are its handwoven striking motifs/buttis and this is what makes Chanderi Saree so gracious. Another characteristic that differentiates it from other textiles produced all over India is its sheer transparency that comes due to the use of single Flature Yarn.

Chanderi Saree - Its not just a saree
Chanderi Saree – Its not just a saree

Me asking: Where do you get the threads from?

We don’t. We just weave it as per the orders brought to us by the bridging agencies. Said Raghuvir, a weaver who works along with his younger brother. Adding to this he told that Bangalore and Banaras are the hubs from where the agencies get the thread from.

On my quest while I was roaming on the streets of the Bunkar village, I knocked a door enquiring them to buy some stuff. Continuing with his work came a voice ‘Yahan nahi milti, wo samne waale makaan mein chale jao’. He said he is just a weaver and doesn’t sell but also directed me to a house that would solve my purpose. I was stumbled as to which house he asked me to go in and then came another voice. It was of a lady, wife of the weaver who directed us. She made sure that we knock on the right door.

With a knock on the bright purple door came out a boy who smiling welcomed us in his house. A small narrow bay lead us in to the central courtyard where the women’s were busy in their routine chores.  And then came Raghuvir who took us into his bedroom cum storage area where a cute little child looked up from his book and gave us a smiling look with gleamy eyes. Hardly two minutes had passed when came the lady of the house serving us water. We were never just a customer to them but now neither were they merely a seller to us. We spent a good amount of time there chit chatting over a cup of tea that was very warmly served to us.

The evolution of Chanderi Saree

The earlier used Throw-shuttle pit was a very time taking process and utilised time and efforts of two weaver sitting side by side for operation. With time the weavers have now shifted to Fly-shuttle looms that can be operated single handily. Even with such advancement it takes 15-20 days to finish a saree, imagine what the scenario would have been in old days. With time what has also changed is the method of dyeing the yarn.

Till about 1920, what used to go under production was just white or off white cloth with a little detailing done using zari or golden thread on the border. But what followed was colourful yarns that were dyed using natural colours extracted from fruits, vegetables, flowers, birds etc and this is what their names were derived from. Like Totai is parot green, Gajari is carrot and so on….But, today natural dyes have chemicals as their competitor.

Chanderi Saree - Its not just a saree
Spinning Wheel

No matter how much the advancements in technology has affected the weavers, the real grace of Chanderi saree comes only from the human touch. The weavers of Chanderi are still using man powered looms and giving shape to their masterpieces. Though the government of Madhya Pradesh has set up a loom park with electrical looms for the upliftment of their age-old fame that comes with Chanderi saree, majority of weavers in town continue to keep their traditional manpower looms up & alive and still produce a product of finesse. That human hand is what makes me say it again that It’s not just a saree. More about developments in weaving machines can be read here.

Seeing our excitement to know about the saree Raghuvir offered to show us around the weaving process which was in action in the adjacent room. He told us about how much days and nights of efforts go into making of just one saree.

Chanderi Saree Weaver
A weaver in work mode

Working on the loom under an luminescent light was a young-looking face. He gave us a look for a while and continued with his work because for them time actually is money. Raghuvir explained all the technicalities involved in the loom which have faded away from my mind (I seriously have to something to get a sharp memory).

Saurav my co-traveller questioned Raghuvir: How low can we go on the price if we wish to buy one? Aane ko to 1000-1500 rupay mein bhi aajati hai pr wo aapko pasand nahi aayengi. Aapke liye 2000 rupay ke aaspas achi sari miljayengi.’ says Raghuvir taking us back to the room we were sitting earlier.

Unfurling some of his creations and then shows a gossamer-fine black saree embraced with golden motifs saying “ye dekho Kareena Sari!” He meant look at the design that was first made and draped by the film star Kareena.

In the meanwhile out of no expectations came Aunty Ji with a cup of tea to make the ongoing discussion cum shopping session more sizzling and asked shall I get you some biscuits.

As the sun was approaching the horizon and there were a lots of exciting activities planned to takeover the night we tried to quickly get over with this shopping cum relationship building that went for about two hours. Even while bidding good-bye to them aunty ji came out of kitchen and insisted us to stay for dinner. Here words touched me and I was in a situation when my heart was saying yes while my tongue was bounded for a no. Bidding adieu to them and that cute little kid that came running to the gate just to say a final goodbye because he was unaware that I will comeback again and his father will be my single point of contact for any future purchases in Chanderi.

With a hope that its needs any further justification to say why Chanderi Saree Is not just a Saree . Just to conclude it I would say It’s not just a saree, it’s about the years old style that they are still following to weave, it’s about the days of effort that goes into one saree, it’s about that little child who probably one day has to get into this and the training for which has already started, it’s about those women’s who are both directly and indirectly part of this and at last it’s about our responsibility to preserve this heritage. If you still feel we are doing enough for them, then read this.

Please buy local and help those who actually deserve it and not those who have made it a business to sell it at exorbitant prices just in the name of brand. Here is the contact of Raghuvir Ji (9827675257) you can directly connect with and make purchases at a very reasonable price.

Rambling solo in Bangalore

*This article contains video clips for better insights of the spots so do click the links.

It was noon when I received a call for Interview in Bangalore. I was quite excited because it was totally unexpected and moreover for it was going to be my first solo trip. I had one month in hand to prepare and get family agreed on the fact that I will go all alone. They insisted on taking some friends or cousin along but clearly disagreeing I managed somehow and left them no other choice in hand  but to grant me permission.

Now let me give you a little insight about Bangalore and then I will continue with how I made a work trip convert into a travel.

Bangalore is a city in Southern India in the state of Karnataka. The city host the silicon valley of India for the techies with all the major companies offices established. From a travelers point of view, the city is a hub for shopaholic with numerous local market and malls overloaded with premium brands to fill your wardrobes with. One can witness Indian heritage at the Bangalore Palace or go for a deep dive into nature’s laps at Nandi Hills.

But how I ended up traveling Bangalore?

Well as I told you I was there for an interview but with no return dates finalized I only booked a one-way flight from Delhi.Since it’s wintering here flights were getting delayed so booked an early morning Spice Jet flight to report there at 2 in the noon.

I was there at 11 in the morning and stuck!!!

They refused to entertain before the scheduled time. Standing at the gate, struggling over my thoughts I took this as an opportunity to start exploring the nearby areas. With 3 hours in hand, I visited two spots Commercial Estate and the Ulsoor Lake.

Commercial Estate

Market located close to the Manipal Center offers shoppers all kinds of goods from high-end brands to local street. The faces of the market are the big shops and as one walks down the street in the back are the shops for low-cost shopping.

Ulsoor Lake

Another nearby site was this Lake. On recommendation from a rickshaw driver I agreed to give it a visit. But, I wonder it was a big mistake to trust him. Wondering why I said so? Well, the gates to the lake were closed and I had to just see it through the grills.

Ulsoor Lake

It was quite a large lake with a central island though the place was not attractive and can be skipped if short of time.

After a long wait it was time to report at the center. By the time all formalities were completed we were all set for the Dinner and then after a short walk in the vast campus we were ready for a goodnight sleep. All this was taken care on the company’s end.

The next day after the process we left the campus post lunch. Waiting along with others at the station in a dilemma to decide the further action it was 7 in the eve when I received a message for flight booking for the next day.

Immediately called up my brother to get it canceled and book ahead in time. But, it was not as easy as to cut the cake and I was asked to check-in in the hotel for the night and take a half day city tour as the flight was in the eve.

A cozy deluxe room

Next morning I was there again calling my bro to get it rescheduled and luckily this time I was successful. Now I was enjoying the relishing breakfast at Ramada by Bangalore and eagerly waiting for the agents text for the new flight bookings. The masala omelette was so delicious that without second thoughts I ordered it twice and the strawberry flavored yogurt just can’t be left out.

Five hours before departure my new bookings were confirmed and now I had 2 days to spend in the city.

And then started the real fun….

It was 1 in the noon and I quickly checked out from the hotel…Now you must be wondering why did I do so if I had to stay for two more nights?

Well, If you see my previous experiences you will find that I don’t stay at same place for more than one day to enjoy a variety.

Today I visited a nearby Church followed by Race course, Bangalore Palace and Iskcon Temple and at last Orion Mall.

St. Mary’s Basilica Church

It was quite hot in the noon and with no idea where I was going walking on the roads I discovered this church and since it was Christmas time I couldn’t miss visiting it. The place was quite crowded and a huge tree ( of course Christmas tree) welcomes you. Further, as you go the interiors of the church were well decorated with props. After spending half an hour I left and explored the street market outside which were full of items like stars, Santa, trees and much more giving a full-fledged festive feel.

St. Marry Basilica Church

Race Course

I was really excited to visit this as I had heard from the locals and hotel staff that one can visit the stallion and see the jockey practicing for races and even enjoy witnessing the horses merely for an entry fee of Rs.20 or Rs.40. But all my expectations were gone vain when I was told that “It’s just on television on which the race that was taking place in Chennai is telecast live for people to bid money”.

Bangalore Palace

Watch the video for better insights

Quite disappointed I headed to next spot. The moment I got down in the first sight of the palace seeing the fortified towers of the palace left me with only excitement and no more disappointments. I quickly took few pics of the exterior and moved in. Purchasing the tickets for Rs. 285 ( will vary for foreigners and camera ) and dropping my luggage at the counter started my 40 min audio tour. An audio tape was provided in your preferred language.

The Majestic Bangalore Palace

As I moved up the wooden stairs the beautiful carvings at the posts can be seen. Also, it had uniqueness in it for no two flowers were carved out to look similar.

The walls were decorated with paintings of prominent personalities and also the architectural blueprint of the palace. The ceilings were crafted with relief paintings which make you feel the grandeur of the palace.

The sprawling ground surrounding the palace and a vast garden is used for organizing events like music concerts or more.

Iskcon Temple

It was 3:30 in the noon when I was here. From the entrance itself I could see the numerous stairs that were to be climbed in the temple. Now, since my phone’s battery was dying and I was totally  dependent on it for hotel booking and GPS, I decided to first book a place to stay nearby and then return back to visit the temple after throwing my luggage in the room.

At 5 in the eve I moved out of the room back to the temple. The temple, devoted to Lord Krishna is majestically built-in four levels with the top-level residing the main temple.

The temple gives an amazing sight at the sunset and it not only looks grand from outside but is actually big with a whole shopping and food street present in the basement of the temple.

Orion Mall

This was the last spot for the day and I had to quickly cover it before the phone dies.

Close to the Iskcon temple at a walking distance is the mall which was not left untouched with the Christmas celebrations.

On one end was a huge Christmas tree shining in the lights and on the other end was a stage where people were getting selfies with the Santa.

Within it resided numerous brands to cater to your shopping lust and on the top floor is the gaming zone which your kids are gonna die for. Be ready to lose some money to try hands in the food court and relish your taste buds.

The day was coming to an end so I returned back to the hotel by 9 PM and filled my tummy at the hotel’s restaurant.

Day 2

Today it was planned to visit Nandi Hills which is about 1.5 hrs by road from Bangalore. On a chat with one of my blogging friends from Bangalore Neha who shares her traveling experiences on Revolving compass she suggested me to visit Lepakshi too along with Nandi Hills. And there I was all set by 10:00 AM after a heavy breakfast waiting for the bus at Majestic Bus Terminal.

Here I met another solo guy Shyam, who was traveling to Nandi Hills and since there were no direct bus at that moment I asked him join me for Lepakshi and then further to reach Nandi Hills by the eve so as to witness the spectacular sunset and leave the next day after sunrise.

Lepakshi Temple

Watch the video for better insights.

From majestic terminus we took a bus going towards Gorantla and after 3 hrs bus ride we were dropped at Kodikonda check-post and were to take a auto-rickshaw for further 16 km. In total it costed Rs. 120 + 15 .

Located 120 km North of Bangalore in state of Andhra Pradesh, Lepakshi village is significant for the shrines of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Veerbhadra. The temple is an archaeological site and is supported on numerous pillars one out of which has gained popularity for it is hanging and touches the ground only at a pinch of a point.

[ngg_images source=”galleries” container_ids=”2″ display_type=”photocrati-nextgen_basic_slideshow” gallery_width=”600″ gallery_height=”600″ cycle_effect=”shuffle” cycle_interval=”3″ show_thumbnail_link=”1″ thumbnail_link_text=”[Show thumbnails]” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]

200 m from the temple is built a giant granite statue of Nandi Bull ( Vehicle of Lord Shiva) which faces towards the shivling in the temple which is guarded by a serpent majestically carved out of a single rock. Myths are that it was carved while they wait for their mothers to get the food prepared. At 3:00 PM we rushed for the Nandi hills for we did not want to miss the sunset.

Nandi Hills

Route – Lepakshi – Hindupur ( Auto-rickshaw) – Chikkballapur( Bus) – Betta Cross (Bus) – Nandi Hills ( Hired a two-wheeler)

All thanks to the bad public transport, the bus we took for Chikkballapur dropped us at 6:30 PM and since we had no bookings for stay at Nandi Hills we were recommended to stay there itself.

After dinner we found another Church, better than the previous one.

Chikkballapur being a small village has not much hotels so at 7:15 PM we decided to settle for a lodge named Swagath Guest House very close to the bus stop.

As told by the locals we were suppose to catch the morning bus at 6:00 AM for Nandi Hill but to utter shock there was no bus till 7:30 AM and so we decided to take the next bus which would drop us half-way at Betta Cross from where we luckily got a two-wheeler on hire ( Rs.6 /km & Rs.10 / hr).

Viewpoint at Nandi Hills

Reaching the hill after missing both the sunset and sunrise we thought we would find nothing much to be amazed about but to prove us wrong our cameras didn’t took a breath of relief. All clicks….clicks…clicks………….

There was an amazing hike through the forest, a picturesque 270 degree wide open scenery, a heritage building and also shooting of a promo for a Kannada film.

Panoramic view from the hilltop

Reached the Bangalore airport at 1 in the noon for a 6 PM flight so had plenty of time to explore. It has all you need feed your shopping lust to hunger calls.

Time to bid a goodbye to Bangalore…..

Time to leave

Tips from my experience –

  • Always have a power bank and rely on GPS
  • Use Ola auto instead of local autos for they are cheaper
  • Make your booking for stay at Nandi Hills prior and reach their by evening
  • Nandi hills timings are from 6 at dusk to 6 at dawn
  • Hire a car for you can cover both Nandi hills and Lepakshi in a day and return back to Bangalore on the same day

Haldwani-Delhi-Manali(755 km)-Chandratal(128km) – Mandi via Manali(236km) – Mcleodganj(131 km) – Amritsar via Pathankot-Delhi(680 km) – Haldwani(278 km)

Day 1 ( Haldwani -Manali)

After two weeks of discussion finally, three of us headed to Spiti valley leaving Haldwani around 3:00 pm and reached Delhi at 7:30 pm. After picking up our one more member we left at 8:00 pm. Reaching murthal at 10:00 pm our stomachs starved for food so we made our first stop at very famous Sukhdev ka Dhaba at Murthal. Spending 2 hrs enjoying food and later Ice cream in the cool breeze we picked up two others and continued our journey.

Day 2

Morning tea with a valley view
Morning tea with a valley view

Enjoyed morning tea on the way and reached Manali at 11:00 am. After checking in at Snow Valley Resort we were given welcome drinks. Later two of our members went for taking  the permission for our way forward to Rohtang and Spiti ahead ( Its is to be obtained from the SDM office and takes about an hour or more). The rest day at rest. In the eve we headed towards Solang valley but had to return from midway due to heavy traffic. Later we enjoyed a walk on the Mall road. We had a lot of expectations from the Momos but all went in vain when we tasted at two stalls and were too costly ( Rs. 60/8pcs for veg and Rs 100/8pcs for non-veg). Taking an auto rickshaw we reached back to our hotel and enjoyed the delicious complimentary dinner.

Day 3

img_1769Moving ahead we left from Manali for Kaza and the hotel staff was so good to provide packaged breakfast early in the morning when we checked out at 6:30 am filled up the tanks as no fuelling station was to be expected before Kaza. We were supposed to take a halt for an hour at Chandratal also called the moon lake and then drove further to Kaza. But thanks to the roads or should I say boulders over which we had to drive the average speed coming to be 10 km/hr. It was almost being dead as the other car from opposite side took a pass. Thanks to our big bro’s fantastic driving skill who solely made this trip possible. We witnessed the famous rally “Raid The Himalayas” sponsored by Maruti Suzuki. Watching the so experienced and completely equipped drivers getting stuck on the way left us stunned as we had no idea about the route and above all no safety gears making it more adventurous and risky. At Batal, 14 km before Chandratal, was the famous Chacha Chachi ka Dhaba probably because it was the only one in that area.

20161013_094425_4

Finally after driving over the boulders in the river, struggling on the sharp curves we reached Chandratal at four in the eve. We booked a camp (first detour due to the bad road) out of the three available owners.  One can easily get it for Rs 800 – 1000  per head with meals. Drove ahead for 2 km from the camp towards the lake. After parking the car it’s about 20 mins walk. Spending an hour near the lake taking some shots we planned to leave as the fast freezing wind started blowing in the area. But for me and my sister so enthusiast, dared to go up ahead to have a better view of the lake were not yet back so  others waited for some time near the lake and later headed to the cars for furthers till our arrival.

img_1857

Reaching back the camp started the longest night we ever had in life. At 6:00 pm it was almost dark and all hungry suffering from a headache. Next, we started making pulao since we were carrying all stuff needed for doing so. We wanted to enjoy outside but the cold freezing wind in the – 6 degree celsius made us move to our camps. Luckily we took a single camp for all six of us instead of individual one. By this time one of us had already vomited and all were suffering from mountain sickness due to very low oxygen. Not too late around 9:00 pm another one vomited twice. All night seemed to be never-ending every minute time passing with speed slower than the snail. Problems were yet not over.

Around 12:00 am our big brother who was to drive us all the way ahead already having breathing problem started suffering from very very severe headache and forehead nerves began to swell. We were all worried and since me and my sister were not much affected gave a head massage to the other two hoping to heal them soon. Before it’s too late I pushed up myself to go out to the car and find the medicine pouch under the phone’s flash. After two hours the effect of medicine was felt and we decided to soon leave the camp.

Day 4

At 7:30 am we came out the temperature was -8 degree celsius and the car was covered with frozen mist, the water bottles kept in the car were frozen and also the water flowing was frozen. We started the engine and left for about an hour meanwhile settled the luggage. When we went to the owner’s camp to pay him he was enjoying the weed and said: ” Abhi to mein bhole ke pass hoon, paise rkh jao”. The minute we left the camp everything started to be back to normal. No headaches. No vomits. There must have been something spooky about the camp no. 3 on the Tenzing camp. May be the story the owner told us about a man killing the other in the camp was true and that’s why he refused to give us the knife. All is well that ends well. We decided to head back to Manali and terminating our journey toward Spiti because of the route. At 9:00 am we left the camp and reached Manali at 3:00 pm and without taking a stop we headed to Mandi and booked Visco Resort that we found on google. Checked in at 7:00 pm and had dominos pizza that we bought from the market before heading to the resort.

Day 5

img_1870Enjoyed a cup of coffee sitting in the riverside garden  listening to the pleasant chirping of birds and watching the mist rising from the river. Since we still had time in hand we had no mood of returning back home we checked out at 11:00 am and headed to Mcleodganj. On the way, after an hour we stopped and cooked our breakfast which included pulao and Maggi with egg. All this took us an hour.

20161014_125302We drove ahead and 40 km ahead of Mandi the condition of the road for 3 -4 km was a pretty bad. At 2:30 pm we reached Baijnath Temple situated on the way to Dharamshala. After a short break, we continued. On the way from Dharamshala to Mcleodganj, we stopped at the church but it was closed so took some shots and left. Reached Mcleodganj at 7:00 pm. Searched for a stay option. After check-in at Hotel Sapphire close to the Mc’LLo square, we came back for filling up our stomachs. We gave a try to two restaurants Tibet Kitchen and Mc’LLo cafe. Since the New Zealand team was in the town for the ODI to be held in Dharamshala we were hoping to see them but our bad. The food at Tibet kitchen was good and Mc’LLo had a lovely north Indian taste but failed at Tibetan cuisine. Next headed to Woeser Bakery for the delicious tart. Back to the room.

Day 6

Enjoyed morning tea at the square and then freshen up, checked out at 9:00 am. Went to the Bhagsu Temple, waterfall and then, at last, the Dal lake. Reached Pathankot at _ and on the diversion quickly took an another detour to Amritsar instead of making it directly to Delhi. Reached Amritsar at 5 :00 pm. First, we were amazed by the level of renovation they have done to the area surrounding the Golden Temple. After praying, we had a glass of Lassi and got some snacks packed from McDonald’s before leaving for Delhi. Took a 1.5 hrs dinner break at Haveli, Rajpura. The food tasted nice and the price was also justified. Reached Delhi at around 5 in the morning. Slept for few hours at sister’s flat.

Day 7

Dropped one of the cousins in Ghaziabad and had breakfast. Left for Haldwani at 11:00 am from Ghaziabad. Reached Haldwani at 4:00 pm.

Trip successfully ended with lots of risks, adventure, and some detours. Thanks to our car Innova and my big bro whose driving skills made the trip successful without giving up even at the hardest point.

After reading all this lot of stuff you would be wondering about the hefty amount of money spent but not to worry as it was merely Rs.8000 per head.

A day in Agra

Taj Mahal – A token of Love

It was the only trip in 4 years of graduation we had which included both boys and girls thanks to one of our friend who convinced the girl’s parents. There were 7 people initially but at night before departure I somehow convinced two of my best friends to come along. So we three left by car as bus tickets were nit available and rest  by bus.

We left in the morning from Greater Noida which took 2.5hrs to cover 200km via Yamuna Expressway. It was amazing to drive with a little cloudy weather One can stopover in the public conveniences on the way for refreshments.

On reaching we checked in to a hostel close to Taj Mahal named BONEFIRE HOSTEL which was nice and cheap. After a little rest we left to watch the symbol of love TAJ MAHAL.

TAJ MAHAL is one of the seven wonders of the world situated on the banks of Yamuna in Agra, India. Sha Jahan got it built up for his eternal love Mumtaaz. In the main tomb is kept her body. The next we headed from there was to the AGRA FORT.

AGRA FORT had an amazing built up structure and the view from the top of fort was majestic. Make sure to instruct the Autorickshaw driver to drop you at Agra Fort and not the railway station of the same name which is close to the fort.

It was eve and we headed back to the hostel and made arrangements for night party in the small lobby outside the room. One can also enjoy the bonfire on terrace in winters. Then we headed for dinner and on my suggestion entered a restaurant named THALIWALA which other members found quite costly so the situation became a bit embarrassing the way they reacted. I seriously had ni idea something like this would happen. So we just ordered coffee and they had choco milk😶. Then they sat at a dhaba for dinner beside four of us who went to Pind Baluchi for nice dinner as it was the first meal of the day we had so something delicious was must.

The next day we checked out and the three of us returned back to home by our car while picking up the very famous  sweet PETHA. Do buy from the original shop of Panchi Petha Wala and beware of the others claiming that they are original.

All in all the trip was amazing and costed us 1600 per pax including stay, car fuel, dinner and some misc expenses excluding the sweets.

The pink city Jaipur

Some people would find this a long story but one must read it as to how we made our four day trip to the titled as  Pink City Jaipur a fun filled, crazy yet a very very lazy vacation.

It was March 23rd 2016 when after fully enjoying the festival of colours “Holi” and completely tired me and my brother were going to bed at 3 in the noon. Just before mr brother was about to sleep I told my brother that we have still 5 days until our next sessional exam so lets plan some trip. As he knows that i always talk about going on a trip he casually said “we’ll think once we wake up. Just take a sleep now.” Thinking about weather he will go or not i went too sleep. To the curiosity i woke up at 5 in the eve and awaken my brother ( for which i had to make tea the best way to wake him up). Luckily, he woke up and agreed for the trip. Now, the question was Where and When to leave and transport.

As i was a lot excited somehow make him and the family agree to leave the same day in an hour i.e around 6:30 PM the place was yet to be decided. While on the way to bus stand (kashmere gate, Delhi) we agreed to reach the bus stop and take a bus going to anywhere in Himachal or Rajasthan. On reaching we found that the ticket counter for Rajasthan was closed and shifted to other bus stand which was about an hour from here. Also the person at the Himachal counter was not present and no one was there to answer were he is.

So meanwhile waiting for him to come we searched for some hotels in Manali and Jaipur and found manali to be expensive because of huge tourist going there so we finalised Jaipur as our destination and left for the other bus stand ( Bikaner House). When the rickshaw driver dropped us we were a bit frightened because it was quite spooky and we could not see any buses on the so called bus stand ( There was a government building named bikaner house which did  not turned out to be the bus stand). After a little exploration we entered a street and luckily found the stand. Took the tickets for the last bus that is at 12:00 AM so as to reach Jaipur by around 6 in the morning. Waited 2 hrs. to board the bus and reached at 4:00 AM whcih we were avoiding.

Day 1 in the Pink City Jaipur

So finally we reached. First we looked some hotels near the Sindhi Bus stand where we were dropped which were shown by a local dealer roaming there but didn’t find what we were looking for. So booked a hotel on makemytrip , called a cab, went to the location as per google map and adding to our adventure we entered a  dark street full of low class houses and there was no hotel. So to save our money on cab we asked him to leave on the main street.

After walking we found what we were looking for but no rooms were available. We walked for another 20 mins saving ourself from a herd of street dogs and finally at 5:30 AM we found what we had earlier booked online ( Maziz prime). It was a nice decent one and we paid 1000 bucks for that with complementary breakfast. Slept, woke, breakfast after freshen up and checked out of the hotel. Visited Hawa Mahal, city palace. Had lunch at nearby Dhaba.Visited the planetarium. By the eve we looked for a new hotel and booked online. Reached hotel at 6:00 PM. After a little rest went down for dinner at Thali Wala restaurant  which was unlimited for 150 bucks and tasty too. After little exploring the market we went back to the rooms for rest to face the next days adventure.

Day 2

After heavy complimentary breakfast we left for the a visit to the Ice world and it was a nice experience in -6॰ celsius. We were done by the noon  after shopping and had a burger to spend less and with nothing to do we went to the airport which was 1 km from there. Just for fun we asked at the counter for cheapest flight from Jaipur. Their response was lucrative GOAAAA but price was not at 8000 bucks. So we quietly left and came out of the airport. Booked a hotel close to the previously booked which we decided the previous night( OM Tower ) at 1400 bucks . Checked in and after a mean while had dinner in the hotels revolving restaurant. The food though was costly ( 400 bucks for a dal ) but not savory.

Day 3

We had no intentions of returning back with still 3 days of holiday left. So after a nice breakfast we checked in to another hotel . It turned out to be the best part of our journey. Had a luxurious stay at hotel Royal Orchid (4 star property) that too just for 1200 bucks. Enjoyed the dominos pizza late in the noon for lunch as the restaurant  was too costly. Satiated  so much by the lunch that had to skip the dinner. Spent the eve on the rooftop pool with amazing views.

Day 4

Woke up. Looked for a new hotel nearby. Went for breakfast as time was running and then headed to the pool. Checked out and headed to other hotel ( The Theme ) for merely 700 bucks  executive room    With breakfast. Spent the day in the room having spectacular view of the airport. One can even treat their shopaholic-ness for which Jaipur is much famous for. Here’s your shopping guide to the streets waiting for shoppers like you. Party in the eve. Checked out at night to return back as next day was the exam else would have stayed more as we still had money left. Took a bus at 11 PM after dinner at the same Thali Wala we previously had.

Overall it was a nice experience exploring all new city without any prior plans that to luxuriously in a low budget. I know we didn’t explored much and kept it a very leisure vacation but unlike us you can have a great time exploring its heritage monuments, forts and also relish some folk music as you sit for a Rajasthani Feast. The pink city Jaipur

Some people would find this a long story but one must read it.

The Naini Lake

This beautiful mango shaped lake situated at Nainital,  Uttarakhand in India is a very famous tourist spot especially for the especially for those who wish to spend some quality time with family away from the heat and hustle bustle of the metropolis. Every year people in huge numbers visit this place in the summers and even winters to play in the snow. And so did me and my friends decided to visit the place …….

Delhi to Haldwani by bus

A lot of buses ply from Delhi ( Anand Vihar ISBT) both directly to Nainital or Haldwani from where you can take a cab (easily found on the bus stand) for the remaining distance of 40 Kms (takes about 1 hr). One can also take a train to Haldwani and a cab thereafter.

We took a bus from Delhi at night and after a 6 hrs. journey  reached Haldwani from where we took a cab for Nainital.

Day 1

On reaching Nainital, we looked out for a place to stay. Luckily we found a nice decent hotel with the amazing lake view on the Mall road at a very very affordable price due to offseason.

After a small sleep we had an omelette for the breakfast and with still empty stomachs left to explore the city. Starting with a few minutes sitting next to the lake enjoying the breeze we were approached by a lot of cab drivers to take us to the around 13 viewpoints around the city. So we decided to take this which costs 700 per pax. The different points included few lakes, horse riding point( paid separately), barahpatthar ( a place where one can learn rock climbing), Lovers & Suicide point, a waterfall, caves (entry fee paid separately) and few more…One can find good options to fill the stomach at the waterfall. After 5 hrs. we were dropped back to the start point.

Next, we headed towards the famous market called The Bhotia Market where one can buy stuff from clothing to games and much more. Then we prayed at Naina Devi temple situated on the Lakeside. Now it was time to feed the stomach and the Bhotia market was the perfect place to eat at. A wide variety of options were available and we tried our hands on the Chinese food the place is known for. One must give a visit to Machan for eating.

Now, as the sun was down we took a walk on the Mall road which I found was better than that of Shimla. It was a really amazing walk with one after the other ice creams. There are lots of restaurants and branded shops one can try. At night the entry of cars is closed and the road is flooded with tourist in seasons.

We reached our hotel and made arrangements for some party. Then the late night Hookah on the terrace with a perfect lake view was the best part ( Because to buy that one HOOKAH we had to trek for about 2 hrs visiting the same place for thrice because of the great help we got from the local shopkeepers).  Thats all for the day GOOD NIGHT…See you tomorrow.

Day 2

We started a little late because of the late night party. We took a boat ride to reach the other side of the Mall road from where we were to take a ropeway which took us to Snow View Point from where the view was as shown above. After enjoying for about an hour we returned back and took a shuttle for the Zoo. I must say it was a very nice one where we saw the tiger, beautiful birds, Chimpanzees and a lot more…

After returning back we filled up our stomachs as it was around 6 in the eve. Next, we took a walk on the Mall road to once again see the beauty and around 8 Pm took the bus back to Delhi.

Cost

Coming over to the most important part we managed the trip in almost negligible cost i.e. Rs 2000 per pax.

Delhi – Nainital-Delhi =  800 per pax

Hotel ( 3 rooms) = Total 1200 per night Shared amongst 7

Boating + cab tour = 800 per pax

Food = 100 Rs per meal per head

I think we had a lot for that little amount and those two days went very well for all of us looking forward to which we soon planned our next trip to Agra.

One must give a visit to the Nanda Devi Mahotsav hosted every year. This time it’s from 6th to 11th of September 2016.

That’s all folks………..
